We Love Our Children, Slow Down

raf clowning around after our sunday night walking session

when we first saw this road signage a few months ago, my carpool-mates and i bursted out laughing. really, our neighbors think of the most hilarious stuff.

we were discussing that well, it's a road and not a playground so it's the parents' responsibility to look after their children playing outside. there were several instances already when we would pass by a two- or three-year old kid, running carelessly on the street while the mother or the yaya animatedly discusses the current economic condition with her neighbors. and when we would try to make the kids stay on the side by honking our horn, they would turn their heads and glare at us as if we don't have the right to drive through. it's annoying, to say the least. and then they put up this sign.

i only got to appreciate this road reminder a few days back, when i saw how rambunctious kids can get when they're having fun, despite a yaya's watchful eye. raf, for instance, rides his bike as fast as he can, with the helper helplessly in tow. my son is too hyper for his own good and yes, he doesn't really heed warnings because he is stubborn like that. it bothers me how his yaya cannot seem to have the "power" to make him follow her instructions but no, it doesn't bother me that he's too active. kids will be kids and i'd only worry when he starts getting too quiet and obedient. hahaha.

now, i've also seen how some motorists can get too ruthless when plying the streets. cars and motorcycles zoom in and out of our block like kings of the road themselves. non-too alert dogs get sideswept and tires leave skid marks on the cement. paranoid as i am, i'm glad somebody had the audacity (it still cracks me up until now, my apologies) and the concern to create that makeshift road block. the drivers may or may not heed it but for me, it's a great deal of showing care for the kids who start crowding the streets as early as 4pm. but i still stand by the fact that the road sign shouldn't be any mother's or helper's excuse on not taking care of their wards. no child should be allowed outside without any nanny and the best way of ensuring everyone's safety is to give your full attention to the task at hand. conversations and discussions are not prohibited but your son or daughter or alaga is more important than the buzz's latest chismis, yes?

i'm glad somebody is taking this social responsibility thing seriously. i'm proud of my neighbors. sometimes. =P

this is actually a very good idea, kaith! saludo ko sa naghimo. here, one dad went as far as to take a picture of his kid, blew it up to human-size proportions, and put it on the side of the road. slow down gyud mga motorists oi, kay they thought at first it was real. i'm sure he was asked to take it down, but the gesture speaks volumes of just how far people will go to protect their kids.

pero you're right, it is the parents' responsibility to watch over their kids, esp outside the home. unsaon na lang sa driver kung kalit lang mo-dagan ang bata sa tunga sa dalan.

BTW, raf is really growing up fast. :-)

@ Jopie: amazing pd na iyang gbuhat oi! haha. it's a good idea, should teach those devil-may-care motorists to slow down on residential areas. i guess if im not a parent myself, i wouldn't really appreciate the gesture, makatawa gyd ka, i swear. hehe. but then, knowing how overprotective one can get when it concerns their kids, that's when i realized that helpful gyd ang sign. hehe.

but i get pissed bitaw gyd anang mga mama and yaya who just let their kids play on the streets nya mag cge ra chismis. dili halos mutagad sa ilang mga anak if naunsa na. hehe.

yeah, he is! he talks like an adult na gyd, makuyawan ko usahay. hahaha.

sakto kaith..you should be thankful to your neighbour who did that sign..walay humps sa inyong roads para mapugos ang cradrivers to slow down? it think that should be the best next thing to suggest in your association meeting=)
sometimes kids are so hyeractive that the yayas cant even catch them when hey just decide to run off, and cross the roads=)

That's a funny sign! Of course, any careful driver should slow down in places where there are kids, like schools, churches, and also residential areas. Also, parents and guardians should always watch over their alagas. One good thing about me being raised in a strict household is that I never went into the streets by myself. As a kid I was trained to stay on the sidewalks at all times. In front of our house where only tricycles can pass through my brothers and I were taught "na tumabi kayo!" even if it was only a bicycle approaching, so my guardians never had that kind of worry with me. The bad thing about it is that I'm still afraid of crossing streets until now. Hehe. You can say I wasn't allowed to be much of a kid.

@ photosandmemos: we have humps man but still, you know how some drivers push on the gas when they get past the humps. mga inutil. hehehe. raf is one of those kids chel. mukalit lang sutoy dagan. hangakon ang yaya niya that's why i am now thankful to that sign. :)

@ katcarneo: that was my first reaction as well, it's a funny sign. hehe. ako din before, we were not allowed gumala. i never learned to cross the street until i came here in cebu. drivers are ruthless, they wouldn't be afraid to hit you that's why we should be extra cautious.

Correct jud, its the responsibility of parents to take care of their kids. If parents are not there, then the yaya should.

@ Girlash: yes, the children shouldn't be left unattended. so many things can happen in what, 10 seconds? maybe i am just being too paranoid but better safe than sorry akong motto. hehe.

@ palagpat: baw huo, kinanglan gd na ang sign sa deaf child areas. drivers should be more than extra cautious there. kaladlawan na ang sa antique, so imbes mulikay, mahapit ka na lang pangcheck sa mga bato nga nagkaladagdag kay basi may gold. hahaha.
